At the Asia TV Forum in Singapore today, local animation house Peach Blossom Media announced three international co-production deals, for shows that have already been picked up by broadcasters in the U.S. and Europe. The company also unveiled its plans to seek a listing in a European public market this month.

TV distributor Evergreen Entertainment has acquired rights to a new kids' cartoon called Tao Shu, which is based on traditional Chinese peasant paintings and produced by Singapore Peach Blossom Media ("PBM").The series (52x12' or 26x24') is aimed at three- to seven-year-olds and has already secured pre-sales to Nickelodeon Asia, TPS France, ATV Hong Kong and Arab language TV's Angad Films.

Four years ago, one three-man team at Peach Blossom Media was working out of an attic in a shophouse. One cartoon, Bruise Black, about a gongfu fighting rabbit facing off evil robots, was chosen by Walt Disney USA to make into a pilot. Another production - Wild Animal Babies - will air in the US this October.

IN a big move to stimulate the computer animation industry in Singapore, the Media Development Authority (MDA) announced it will invest S$9m in a slate of seven animation TV series for children by a W3 investee - animation creator Peach Blossom Media - to be marketed to international broadcasters such as Nickelodeon and Disney. MDA's chief executive officer, Dr Christopher Chia, yesterday said the deal - the largest investment by MDA so far in a local firm -"By creating opportunities for the Singapore media industry to work with international partners on international projects, we raise the profile of made-by-Singapore content, as well as open doors to new markets for them".

Nickelodeon Asia Programming and Acquisitions Director Syahrizan Mansor told Animation 'xpress that,....Elaborating on locally created content Syahrizan added, "There is a great potential for localized content for TV in Asia. I believe local content would definitely connect to Asian kids immediately as there are relevant themes in some of the shows that are available, that kids can relate to. Nickelodeon Asia-Pacific is thrilled to be able to bring these shows to our Asia viewers. Internationally, distributors are also beginning to realize that there is a demand for more shows created in Asia as well."
